Any dog can bite a human if it feels threatened, if the dog is provoked, or if the dog is suffering from a neurological condition that affects its ability to control its aggression. In fact, any animal, domestic or wild, can bite and cause a human to suffer a serious injury. But with dogs, some breeds of dog are more likely to bite human victims than other. For example, rottweilers are fairly common guard dogs whereas shih tzus are generally kept as companions. When a dog has been trained as an attack or guard dog, it is more likely to display aggressive tendencies and bite victims when provoked.
In Illinois, a dog’s owner is liable for all damages caused by the unprovoked attack of his or her dog. If you or your child have been bitten by a dog, you may be able to recover compensation for your damages through a dog bite claim.
According to a 2009 report published on dogsbite.org, pit bulls were responsible for 59 percent of the fatal dog bites recorded between 2006 and 2008. It is important to remember that “pit bull” is not a specific breed of dog, but refers to a type of dog that is exemplified by a few different breeds and mixes between them. These breeds include the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
Rottweilers are often cited as one of the breeds most likely to bite human victims. Rottweilers are commonly kept as guard dogs and are characterized by their broad, strong jaws. In the dogsbite.com report cited above, rottweilers were named the second-most dangerous dog breed. They were responsible for 14 percent of the recorded fatal dog bites.
German shepherds are frequently used as police and military dogs. This is because of their driven, aggressive nature. Although this nature makes them ideal working dogs, it can lead to bites in dogs that are not properly trained and socialized. German shepherds are another breed that often finds itself listed as one of the most dangerous dog breeds in America. Along with the breeds above, German shepherds are also often named in breed-specific legislation, which are laws that bar certain breeds of dog from living in some municipalities.
Despite their small size, Jack Russell Terriers also frequently appear on published lists of the breeds most likely to bite human victims. Jack Russell Terriers were originally bred to hunt rodents and have retained their feisty, aggressive nature to this day.
